DVD-Ranger review

Thursday, 03 June 2010

Hot on the heels of our DVD Ripper review comes DVD-Ranger. Altogether a similar product, but in our eyes slightly better.

So the basics. DVD-Ranger is designed to easily make digital copies of your DVD movies. There are many reasons for wanting to back up your DVD collection. My favourite is the fact that children show an alarming lack of respect for DVDs which seem to obtain scratches in their mere presence.

Making copies of DVDs is a real pain however - which is why software like DVD-Ranger exists. The product itself is pretty much a one click backup solution. It does take quite a long time to back up a disc (this is partly due to the speed of your DVD drive, partly due to your RAM since graphics processing is a hugely demanding task and partly down to the file format you have chosen) so you might want to do them in the evening or over the weekend when you don't need your machine for intensive tasks.

You can convert the DVD into a wide range of popular file formats. But it's once you have those digital copies that DVD-Ranger excels.

First, you can convert them into BlueRay format. You can burn up to 10 typical movies onto a BlueRay disc. The software claims to Up-Convert movies for the best cinematic experience. I wouldn't go that far but the BlueRay conversion is a triumph.

Second, you can convert them into portable format for playing on your iPod, iPhone or iPad (plus many other portable devices). This is n essential feature of DVD copy software and DVD-Ranger handles it well.

We give this product top marks, which nudges DVD Ripper off the top spot due to it's lack of BlueRay support.

Other names: DVD-Ranger, dvd-ranger.com, dvdranger

Compare DVD-Ranger to the competition

I've had several of these types of programs. This program has never locked up on me and is still the one I use today. It has the feel of something much more expensive but is really very cheap like pocket money really. Just think of how much time it saves.
